Behind the Scenes: Talking SS13 Womenswear Inspiration

The Religion Spring Summer '13 collection has arrived and we like what we see - from unexpected brights and tempting textures to dramatic shapes and graphic prints. We caught up with Jasmijn, the Senior Womenswear Designer at Religion to find out about the inspiration for the collection.

What is a typical day at Religion for you?
I start the day with my emails, then discuss the pieces I am working on with the pattern cutter and the other womenswear designer. And of course my boss! Sometimes we have a fitting, or I do some draping on the stand. Then I’ll spend the day doing research or just put my head down and draw.

What did you use as inspiration for the SS13 collection?
Witchcraft. We were looking at Anglo Saxon religions (keeping it close to home) and witchcraft in general. We took this as inspiration for some of the prints, graphics, colours – even the embellishment and shapes.

What is your favourite piece from SS13?
The Zombie skirt and top (that’s two!)I love the painted sequins. Every piece is hand painted and therefore unique.

Which celebrity would you love to see wearing your designs?
Allison Mosshart from The Kills.

What is your style staple?
I am such a lazy dresser and can usually be found in jeans and a tee. This season I’ll be wearing the stripy Sybil jeans and the white Guilty jeans. Plus I can’t wait to start wearing the Harmony Stripe kaftan.

Sybil Jeans in Dazzling Blue, Opal Grey and Molten Lava.

Where is your favourite spot in London and why?
The Barbican Conservatory early in the morning, when it is still quiet. Who doesn’t love an indoor jungle?

What is your guilty pleasure?
Red wine and liquorice; an unexpected but good combination.
